Meaningful Homework
Homework provides students with the opportunity to extend their learning outside the classroom.
What Research About Homework Shows:
- The amount of homework assigned should vary by grade level, and parent involvement should be minimal.
- Teachers should set routines, explain the purpose of homework, and never send home an assignment that students cannot do.
- Whenever possible, students should begin their assignments in class under the direction of the teacher, so she/he can check for understanding and provide assistance as needed.
- Students should adapt skills while they are learning them. Speed and accuracy are key indicators of the effectiveness of practice.
- Feedback generally produces positive results; teachers can never give too much. Feedback about homework should be corrective in nature; it should be specific and given in a timely manner.
